The Ministry of Local Government invites applications from suitably qualified persons for employment on contract, for a period of two or three years in the under-mentioned positions.
DATABASE SPECIALIST (1 position)
Responsible for the development implementation and maintenance of all databases, inclusive of disaster readiness procedure in relation to critical data.
The incumbent must ensure the integrity, security confidentiality and accessibility of the data.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Formulates, implements and monitors access policies and strategies of the Ministry.
- Monitors and improves server performance of SQL Server machines.
- Design, implements and maintains backup and recovery strategies for all data files.
- Troubleshoots all database problems and monitors the overall performance of the database environment.
- Install product patches as needed.
- Establishes and automates the scheduling of database maintenance functions of RDBMS production applications.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
- Ability to interpret data models and to develop database structures.
- Knowledge of Arc GIS Server Software and Autocad would be an asset.
- Ability to use standard diagramming techniques to design and develop computer data models.
- At least 5 years’ experience in troubleshooting applications, optimizing databases, referential integrity and the use of indexes.
- Excellent database performance tuning and capacity planning skills.
- Ability to develop and enforce database standards and database security.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills to deal with diverse clients.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology or equivalent. At least five (5) yeas’ experience in database management systems including storage, structure, data models, report writing, query languages and schemes.
Proficient in Oracle 8x or 9I, SQL Server, MS Access. Working knowledge in MS SQL Server Database manipulation using SQL, any equivalent combination of experience and training.
